Excerpt
Frustration:
The drop point was around fifty-five miles east; about an hour and a half there and back. There was no music, no distractions; just the two of us. Great.

“You know, we’ve been working together for almost three months, why don’t you just call me Liam?” he said after we’d gotten on the road.

“Okay… Liam.”

After some more awkward time passed he went on, “Do you mind if I call you Kayla?”

“I don’t care.” I muttered out the window.

“Fine,” he said. “You don’t care.”

We sat silent again.

“So, what got you working with Doctors Without Borders?” he asked, making small talk I guessed.

“Really? We’re going to have this conversation? Do you really want to be friends with me… Liam?”

“We are working together. It’s better than being enemies.”

“Look,” I said. “I truly appreciate the work you’ve done here.” I said. He rolled his eyes. I guessed he thought I was being sarcastic. “Honestly,” I continued. “You’ve done an amazing job; I just don’t want to make friends with a guy like you.”
